Student-to-Student Support

Peer education and counseling programs provide students with meaningful ways to participate in the delivery of health care and wellness activities. Through involvement with these programs, students gain knowledge and experience, enhance interpersonal skills, and develop new relationships. All student volunteers receive training and ongoing supervision from professional staff members at HUHS.

Peer education groups help to extend health and wellness education beyond the walls of HUHS by promoting healthy lifestyles among their fellow students. HUHS professional and clinical staff train group members to contribute to a healthy student community by providing resources and acting as counselors in various areas of concern to college students.

Student Mental Health Liaisons (SMHL)
SMHLs are student leaders in promoting a supportive student mental health community at Harvard, and helping the community to better understand issues of emotional well-being, early recognition of students in distress, and treatment effectiveness and options.

Drug & Alcohol Peer Advisors (DAPA)
DAPAs are a select group of student-leaders trained to respond to questions about alcohol and other drug issues at Harvard.

Consent Assault Awareness & Relationship Educators (CAARE)
CAARE members serve as liaisons between the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention & Response (OSAPR) and the Harvard undergraduate community. They further OSAPR’s broad mission of engendering a student culture free or interpersonal violence by coordinating and promoting relevant programming and informing OSAPR’s outreach strategies.

Harvard Men Against Rape (HMAR)
HMAR members seek to prevent interpersonal violence in the Harvard community by engaging other men in advocating for gender equality and respect and promoting the necessary presence of men as agents who challenge the attitudes of other men and society as a whole in order to reduce sexual violence.

Health Peer Advisors & Liaisons (HealthPALs)
HealthPALs is a team of healthcare liaisons between the campus community and Harvard University Health Services, who lead health outreach and guide students in accessing, navigating, and managing their healthcare on campus. HealthPALs are also certified in first aid and CPR, and have HealthKITs to provide first aid supplies and single-dose over-the-counter medications to students in each of the Houses.

Peer counselors listen and respond in a non-judgmental way to a variety of concerns common to other students. Coming from various backgrounds, peer counselors realize that each person's experience is unique and reflects differences in class, culture, ethnicity, gender, race, and sexual orientation. All student volunteers receive training and ongoing supervision, and confidentiality and anonymity are guaranteed.

Eating Concerns Hotline and Outreach (ECHO)
ECHO is committed to addressing the serious issue of problems with food from anorexia and bulimia to body image.

In Common
In Common is a confidential peer support and referral hotline serving Harvard graduate students.

Peer Contraceptive Counselors (PCC)
PCC is a group of male and female undergraduates trained to counsel students on issues of sexuality, relationships, STIs, AIDS/HIV, safe sex, and contraception.

RESPONSE is a group of undergraduate women who are concerned about physical and emotional violation.

Room 13
Room 13 is a confidential peer counseling group staffed by two counselors every night from 7 PM to 7 AM.
