Frequently Asked Questions for Graduating Students

Can I continue my Harvard Student Health Plan?
No, it is not possible to continue on this plan.

Why is COBRA not available through the Harvard Student Health Plan?
The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 (COBRA) is a federal mandate requiring employers to offer extension of health care benefits to their employees after termination of employment. The Harvard Student Health Plan is not an employer group and is therefore not required to offer health insurance extensions under COBRA.

Can I be treated at HUHS?
Graduating students (and their covered dependents) are eligible to receive care at HUHS on a fee-for-service basis for up to two months after the Student Health Insurance ends. HUHS does not accept insurance other than BCBS.

Is there any documentation I need when I apply for coverage?
You may need a “Certificate of Health Plan Coverage”, which you will receive if you are enrolled in the Harvard Student Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan (BCBS). You will receive two letters from BCBS:

  • The first letter will arrive before your insurance end date. This letter is a reminder that your insurance will be ending soon.
  • The second letter is the “Certificate of Health Plan Coverage”, which will be mailed after your insurance end date. This certificate is proof of your prior insurance coverage. You may need this document when applying for coverage with a new health plan. Keep this letter in a safe place.
