Statement on National Stimulant Medication Shortage

HUHS is aware of the current national shortage of prescription stimulant medications such as Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta Methylphenidate, Vyvanse and Dextroamphetamine and Amphetamine. These drugs are typically used in the treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Drug manufacturers have been unable to produce sufficient quantity to meet current patient needs.

Although HUHS does not have control over the production or availability of these medications, we want to help patients understand the situation and navigate the process with tips that may make obtaining them less challenging.

  • Check local pharmacies daily/regularly about the availability of the prescription
  • If your pharmacy is out of stock and you find a pharmacy that does have it in stock, please call the front desk for your provider and ask that they fax in a new prescription to the new pharmacy ASAP to try to get it filled before the identified supply is depleted.
  • Request refills of prescriptions 5 days before your current medication runs out
  • Once filled, pick up your prescription within 24 hours of it being available
  • Check the FDA website to see what medications are still experiencing shortages

We recognize that this situation can be challenging and difficult for patients who are affected by this nationwide issue. We encourage patients to be proactive and communicate with their prescribers and pharmacists to implement a plan to get their prescriptions filled.
