A Health and Wellbeing Message for the Start of the Semester
Dear Members of the Harvard Community,
The start of a new academic year is exhilarating and often a bit overwhelming. As you continue settling into the rhythm of the fall semester, please know that Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) is here to support your health and wellbeing.
Our multi-specialty medical practice is open to all students enrolled in the Student Health Program regardless of their insurance, as well as thousands of employees and dependents covered by the Harvard University Group Health Plan (HUGHP). In-person and telemedicine mental health care is available to students via Counseling and Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Behavioral Health is available to faculty and staff who receive primary care at HUHS and who are insured through HUGHP, Medicare, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA High Deductible Health Plan. Wellbeing programs and services such as meditation, acupuncture, and massage are offered to the entire Harvard community at the Center for Wellness and Health Promotion.
Protect Against Respiratory Illness: Attend an HUHS Flu Vaccine Clinic
HUHS is committed to addressing public health matters that impact our campus community. The fall semester overlaps with the start of cold and flu season and an uptick in respiratory illness. When gathering for classes, events, and holidays, remember to protect yourself and our community. These simple precautions bear repeating:
- Wash your hands before eating and after using the bathroom.
- Stay home if you feel ill. If you must go out while unwell, wear a face mask.
- Get the annual flu shot and the latest COVID-19 vaccine. In Massachusetts, everyone six months and older is eligible to receive the latest COVID-19 vaccine. Check with your local pharmacy for availability.
HUHS will host a week-long flu vaccine clinic from Monday, September 29 through Friday, October 3 (10 am – 6 pm, 8 pm on Wednesday) in the Smith Campus Center. Vaccination will also be available in the Longwood Medical Area on Thursday, October 23 and Tuesday, November 4 from 10 am – 2 pm. Students, faculty, and staff who are current Harvard ID holders can receive vaccination at these clinics at no cost. Schedule your vaccination via the HUHS Patient Portal.
Students are required to receive flu vaccines each year. Those who do not submit proof of flu vaccine—or any other required immunizations—will be prevented from dropping/adding fall semester courses and/or registering for spring semester courses.
Resources Beyond HUHS
In addition to the supports available through HUHS, the University provides resources for students, faculty, and staff facing mental health challenges. Harvard’s Employee Assistance Program also assists eligible faculty, staff, and their families with personal or work-related challenges including counseling, career support, and elder care referrals.
Social connectedness is a cornerstone of mental wellbeing. The results of the recent Healthy Minds Survey indicate there is an opportunity to develop stronger ties among students on campus. As the semester picks up steam, I encourage you to carve out time to socialize with your friends, family, and colleagues. Harvard’s CrimsonZip app may be of use in connecting with your fellow Harvard community members who have shared activities and interests, including group physical activities.
As always, the wellbeing of our community is central to keeping Harvard healthy. I wish you all the best this semester.
