Additional Information

Obstetrics

Our team of providers offers family planning services and preconception counseling. We routinely care for both low and high-risk pregnancies, including vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) and twins. Our obstetric patients deliver at the Bain Birthing Center at Mount Auburn Hospital, a family-centered unit dedicated to providing individualized, supportive care. Our maternity services include a Level II nursery and 24-hour in-house pediatric coverage. Obstetric anesthesia is always available. During the postpartum stay, breastfeeding is encouraged, and lactation consultants provide daily education and assistance.

Gynecology

We provide preventive, well-woman care for all ages, in addition to medical and surgical management of a wide range of gynecologic problems, including:

  • Infertility evaluation and treatment
  • Menstrual abnormalities
  • Endometriosis
  • Abnormal pap smears
  • Menopause
  • Fibroids

We are experienced in traditional surgical techniques, as well as minimally invasive hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. We also offer a variety of in-office minor procedures when appropriate.

Sub-Specialty Care

We collaborate closely with sub-specialists in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, and Urogynecology.

Midwifery

What is a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are highly qualified medical providers. They must complete master’s-level training in addition to nursing school, plus pass board examinations and obtain state licensure in both disciplines.  A good CNM strives not only to provide appropriate care but also to understand and value the patient’s individual needs.  CNMs provide general women’s health care throughout the lifespan.  These services include annual gynecologic exams; pre-pregnancy planning; pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care; routine gynecologic complaints; diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. CNMs prescribe a wide range of medications and treatments, including contraception and insert contraceptive devices in the office. The Midwives at Mount Auburn (MAMA) deliver approximately 44% of all the babies born at the hospital every year.

What to expect from Midwifery care

We are devoted to addressing the health need of those with female anatomy. We provide a whole-person approach to care and can offer care from puberty through and beyond menopause. We will work with you to prepare you for pregnancy, provide care through labor and birth and support you as you move into parenthood. We, as certified nurse-midwives are also educated to manage your gynecological needs and provide you with general healthcare services throughout your life. We value the opportunity to develop a relationship of trust and mutual respect so that you can be a full participant in making decisions concerning your health.

Can anybody have a nurse-midwife?

Most women can have a nurse-midwife for their care. You can see a midwife as long as you have no serious medical problems. If complications should arise during pregnancy or labor your midwife will consult with an obstetrician or other medical specialist and refer you to them for further treatment if necessary. You will be made aware during every step of that process and the handover is always smooth and seamless given our strong relationship with our physician colleagues.
